Setup Wizard
The six-step wizard covers Welcome, API Key, Assistant, Knowledge Base, Tools, and Finish. It is an onboarding shortcut, not a separate configuration store.
The wizard writes into the same settings used by the main plugin screens. It does not create a separate “wizard configuration.” The knowledge step is also a real two-stage operation: it first saves selected WordPress IDs and then starts the vector-store synchronization request. This is why a completed wizard step can still require attention if an API or individual source returned an error.
Start with the smallest safe step: start at welcome. Do not consider the task finished before you finish setup to record completion and return to ai website chat; this is where the configuration is tested in the context that truly consumes it.
What this feature does and when to use it
Section titled “What this feature does and when to use it”Use it on a new installation or reopen it later to repeat the guided flow.
Use this feature in the following situations:
- You are completing first-time onboarding and want the required tasks presented in a safe order.
- You skipped knowledge or tools initially and want to return to the guided choices later.
- You need to understand what each wizard button changes before allowing it to call OpenAI or install a preset.
Where to find it
Section titled “Where to find it”Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- SmartSite Assistant is installed and activated.
- You are signed in with an account that can manage WordPress options.
Set it up step by step
Section titled “Set it up step by step”- Start at Welcome.
- Enter the regular OpenAI API key; the wizard stores it but does not perform a connection test.
- Create the first local assistant profile.
- Select published pages/posts and click Save Selection & Sync; the browser saves selection first and then calls the vector sync endpoint.
- Optionally install one or more tool presets and edit their sample values later in Tools.
- Finish setup to record completion and return to AI Website Chat.
Fields, controls, and important values
Section titled “Fields, controls, and important values”The wizard collects the minimum information needed to move from an empty installation to a working assistant. Its choices are not equally important: the API key enables AI requests, instructions shape every response, selected pages provide factual grounding, and tools add narrowly controlled capabilities. Skipped sections remain available later, so it is better to skip an uncertain choice than save unreviewed content.
| Field, control, or status | What SmartSite Assistant does with it | How to use it and why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| API Key | Required in the wizard. Saved to the plugin OpenAI setting; no live validation occurs here. | Treat “API Key” as a secret connection value. Redact it everywhere, confirm it belongs to the same account as the related identifiers, and use a controlled test to distinguish successful storage from successful authentication. |
| Assistant fields | Name, display name, welcome message, instructions, and model. The new profile becomes active. | Changing “Assistant fields” can alter capability, wording, speed, cost, or language, but it cannot fill gaps in the knowledge base. Compare the same realistic prompts before deciding that a model or translation choice is an improvement. |
| Page search / checkboxes | Filters and selects published pages and posts for synchronization. | Changing “Page search / checkboxes” only changes the administrator’s view. Keep the selection focused enough to compare similar conversations, and avoid treating a visible pattern as proof until individual rows support it. |
| Tool presets | Contact Information, Business Hours, and Contact Request. Preset values are examples and require review. | Keep the tool associated with “Tool presets” disabled while checking valid, missing, malformed, and repeated inputs. Enable it only when the model description is narrow and the complete result cannot reveal or change anything beyond the approved purpose. |
| Skip for now | Available for optional steps; it records progress and advances. | “Skip for now” covers the following responsibility: Available for optional steps; it records progress and advances. This may enable responses, guide their content, or support delivery rather than improve answer quality on its own; the page’s final test shows which effect applies. |
How to confirm it is working
Section titled “How to confirm it is working”Use a separate test session to confirm Setup Wizard. This keeps existing login, browser storage, and response history from hiding the change, and it shows whether the result reaches the complete workflow rather than stopping at WordPress storage.
Practical example
Section titled “Practical example”Skip Tools during onboarding, then configure a Contact Request preset later with a controlled destination address.
Recommended practice
Section titled “Recommended practice”- Change one part of Setup Wizard at a time and keep a short record of the previous value and test result.
- Verify the saved result in the screen, visitor session, or connected service that actually consumes the setting.
Important warnings
Section titled “Important warnings”Common problems and focused checks
Section titled “Common problems and focused checks”| Problem | What to check and what to do next |
|---|---|
| Selections save but synchronization fails. | Open Knowledge Base, confirm the OpenAI key and active assistant, then run Sync and inspect the per-item errors. |
| Setup Wizard is missing or does not match this guide. | Confirm the plugin is active and the account can manage WordPress options. Confirm activation, administrator access, and that the setup workflow was not completed in another session. |
| A change on Setup Wizard does not produce the expected result. | Keep the exact notice and test case, then review the browser console and WordPress/PHP log. Confirm activation, administrator access, and that the setup workflow was not completed in another session. |
