Generate Metadata with AI
The suggestion tool sends processed page content to OpenAI gpt-4.1 with a JSON schema and returns draft metadata for administrator review.
AI suggestions are drafts generated from the processed source text and a limited set of related-page candidates. The plugin asks for a structured result with bounded categories, topics, FAQs, facts, and exclusions, then places the proposed values in a review interface. Nothing becomes part of synchronized knowledge until an administrator applies, saves, and synchronizes it.
Work through this page by starting when you open a source metadata editor and select suggest with ai. Finish by making sure you select save metadata, then run sync; if that check fails, the field descriptions help identify whether the problem belongs to content, behavior, transport, or operations.
What this feature does and when to use it
Section titled “What this feature does and when to use it”Use it to accelerate metadata authoring, never as an automatic publication step.
Use this feature in the following situations:
- You need a first metadata draft for a well-written page and will fact-check it.
- You want metadata in a supported language while preserving product names and source meaning.
- You want to merge missing metadata without manually retyping all existing values.
Where to find it
Section titled “Where to find it”Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- SmartSite Assistant is installed and activated.
- You are signed in with an account that can manage WordPress options.
- A regular OpenAI API key.
- A published page or post with meaningful text content.
Set it up step by step
Section titled “Set it up step by step”- Open a source metadata editor and select Suggest with AI.
- Choose one of the seven supported languages or the plugin default.
- Optionally add guidance of up to 400 characters.
- Request suggestions and review every category, summary, topic, FAQ, fact, relation, and exclusion.
- Choose the preserve/merge or replace application mode intentionally.
- Apply the draft to the form.
- Select Save Metadata, then run Sync.
Fields, controls, and important values
Section titled “Fields, controls, and important values”AI suggestions can save time when a page is long or difficult to summarize, but the generated metadata becomes useful only after a person checks it against the source. Good summaries, topics, FAQs, and facts can make the page easier to retrieve for differently worded questions. Incorrect suggestions can do the opposite by steering searches toward the wrong source, so review before applying.
| Field, control, or status | What SmartSite Assistant does with it | How to use it and why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Language | English, Dutch, German, Spanish, French, Croatian, or Italian. | Changing “Language” can alter capability, wording, speed, cost, or language, but it cannot fill gaps in the knowledge base. Compare the same realistic prompts before deciding that a model or translation choice is an improvement. |
| Guidance | Optional context, maximum 400 characters. | Write “Guidance” for the person or system that consumes it: a visitor, an administrator, or the model. Specific wording can guide better questions or tool selection; vague promises and mixed purposes make expectations—and sometimes responses—less reliable. |
| Preserve / merge | Keeps existing values and merges supported list content. | Choose this when useful metadata already exists and the suggestion should add missing topics, questions, facts, or relationships. Merging protects careful editorial work, but review the combined result for duplicates or conflicting wording before synchronization. |
| Replace | Replaces existing metadata fields with the reviewed suggestion. | Choose replacement only when the existing metadata is empty, obsolete, or clearly weaker than the reviewed suggestion. Because the new set becomes the retrieval context, replacing good human-written clues with a vague generation can make the page harder—not easier—to find. |
| AI output limits | Category 80 chars; summary 650; up to 12 topics, 6 FAQs, 8 key facts, 6 related pages; exclusion 600 chars. | Choose “AI output limits” from observed needs rather than guesswork. Boundary values can affect availability, detection, display, or reporting; test a normal case and an edge case so useful conversations are not sacrificed for an arbitrary number. |
| Request bounds | Processed source content is capped at 24,000 characters and related candidates at 12. | Long pages and related-page lists are shortened before generation to keep the request controlled. If the important material sits outside those bounds, the suggestion may miss it; write or refine the metadata manually rather than assuming the AI reviewed every character. |
How to confirm it is working
Section titled “How to confirm it is working”Confirm Generate Metadata with AI with the smallest representative end-to-end test. When the result differs from the success description, keep the exact input and state so troubleshooting can identify the responsible layer without changing unrelated AI settings.
Practical example
Section titled “Practical example”Generate Croatian metadata for an English-titled service page, then correct product names before saving.
Recommended practice
Section titled “Recommended practice”- Change one part of Generate Metadata with AI at a time and keep a short record of the previous value and test result.
- Judge the change with a fresh question that depends on this source; an admin status cannot show whether retrieval chose it.
Important warnings
Section titled “Important warnings”Common problems and focused checks
Section titled “Common problems and focused checks”| Problem | What to check and what to do next |
|---|---|
| Related pages are missing. | The model can only choose from the internal related candidates prepared for the request. |
| Suggestion request is empty or malformed. | Retry with meaningful page content and shorter guidance; preserve the error for diagnostics. |
| Generate Metadata with AI is missing or does not match this guide. | Confirm the plugin is active and the account can manage WordPress options. Check selection, synchronization, remote processing, and retrieval evidence in that order. |
| A change on Generate Metadata with AI does not produce the expected result. | Keep the exact notice and test case, then review the browser console and WordPress/PHP log. Check selection, synchronization, remote processing, and retrieval evidence in that order. |
